This easy project is made up of lots of squares, rectangles, and semi-square triangles. It's relatively easy to make and perfect for sewing beginners.

Quick and easy sewing project

Quick and easy projects are my favorite type of project. Minimal time investment per project, but the results are worth it! (Also because I love to make dresses for girls - like thispeasant dressor onedress with pillowcase.)

This heart table runner is a perfect example of a quick project that really makes an impact. Heart blocks are very quick to assemble and you only need to make four. (This is perfect for those of us who aren't particularly fond of doing the same block over and over lol.)

table runner details

  • Finished Size: 47.5 x 13 inches
  • Finished Heart Block Size: 10 inches (10.5 inches unfinished)

The table runner design consists almost entirely of squares and half-square triangles. The design makes it easy to thread all your squares together and assembly takes place very quickly.

variations

  • Make it shorter or longer by adding or subtracting the number of hearts or increasing or decreasing the size of the squares. For example, increasing the patches to 3.5" provides a 12" heart block or decreasing them to 2.5 provides an 8" block.
  • Make a full size quilt by adding more rows.
  • Use the block to make a quilt, leave the headband free and add a solid square or chain block between each heart block for a different look.

Quilting/Sewing Tips:

  • Press and iron the fabric before sewing and cutting. One thing to keep in mind when cutting and sewing half-square triangles is that as you cut and press, the blocks may stretch or line up awkwardly, making your squares "wobbly". Pre-pressing and starches help with this.
  • Don't forget to check the seam allowance before starting to sew.! Every time I start a project, I line my needle with asewing ruler. I recommend this tooLeaded quarter-inch foot. (Just pick one that fits your machine.) You can use the seam allowance guide with this foot, and after I adjust my needle, the guide helps line up all my seams perfectly.
  • Quarter inch bare seam substance:When sewing your half-square triangles together, I recommend using aquarter-inch tight seam allowance. This will give you a little extra fabric when lining up the half-square triangles.
  • Square your half-square triangle blocks:Don't skip squaring the half-square triangle blocks! You can use almost any square ruler for this, but there are some special rulers I like to use to square my blocks. I used in the pastthis modelto square my blocks, but I like to use that too5.5 inch block locomotiveruler orperfect 5Ruler.
  • Each of these rulers and arotary cutting matmakes it faster to cut all those blocks. (Love this swivel cutting mat! It also comes with an ironing mat that came with mine)portable iron, it's perfect to go! There are cheaper rotary cutting mats, but this is it.very high quality, it's big.)

Step 1: Cut the fabrics

Cut the fabrics according to the table above. (Fabrics 1, 2, 3 and 4 are the 4 different hearts.)

Step 2: Assemble Half Square Triangles

For faster assembly, we're going to make these half-square triangle blocks using the two-in-one method.

  • Line up a 3.5" background fabric with a 3.5" patterned fabric with right sides together. Using a pencil, draw a diagonal line across the back of one of the squares.
  • Sew a scant 1/4 inch on each side of the line you drew. (It's important to sew to an inch tight, this gives you extra room when trimming.)
  • Use a rotary cutter or scissors to divide the square along the line you drew.
  • Roll out the squares, press and cut the block into 3 square inches.
